Today I am posting as a part of the Christmas in July week put on by Cross my Heart Papercrafts!
I chose to do an advent calendar, because every year I try to create a different Advent Calendar for my 2 kiddos. ย Remember those old spools I bought at the antique store–well I thought this would be the perfect use for them!!
The hardest thing about this project, was taking the pictures without having an actual tree to put the ornament advent calendar on! I think the kids might think I was a little crazy, pulling out the big tree in the middle of July-ย
I took strips of Christmas paper from my stash – some DCWV, some Echo Park and covered the inside of the spools using Scor-tape.
Then I stamped the numbers, using the Banner Stamp- and adhered those onto the spools as well ๐
I used theย Pink by Design Banner Stamp Setย ๐
Then- I threaded wraphia through the hole in the spool and tied it at the bottom.
I added little jewelry tags, with clues on where to find the Advent Calendar surprise- usually candy in our house.
I thought this would be a fun way to do the advent calendar this year, with the kids getting a little older… They love a good “mystery” ๐
That’s it!! Simple- and even the kids could help! ย If you don’t have spools laying around– you can pick some up at a flea market or an antique store for pretty cheap–I got all of these plus a bunch more for under $10
I hope you enjoyed my little twist on the Advent Calendar- and I hope that you have a Happy Christmas in July as well as in December!

I used to make things out of my mom’s empty spools when I was a kid–nice to see a new “grown-up” project I could make with them!
What a great idea and I have some of those spools too.
I love your advent calender, i think it has a down home country feel to it. Love it love it,
what a cute idea. bet there are some sewers out there who will be making one of these this year. tfs.
What a great idea! I was at AC Moore the other day, and I saw a tree made out of cardboard or something with little drawers that can be pulled out. I started thinking about what I could do for an Advent calendar when I have my own kiddies. Right now at my house, my mom has one that she hangs on our fridge. Each day there’s a little character or animal that gets put onto the nativity scene with velcro. My younger brother and I are supposed to take turns each day, but I guess I’m old enough to let him do it every day now, hehe. ALTHOUGH if it’s my year to add on baby Jesus, I do it!
I love this idea! I can see it hanging on my tree looking fabulous.
What a great idea…Thanks for sharing
This is fabulous! What a creative idea. This is officially on my holiday to-do list!
