Tree Time

Tree Time

Hi everyone!

It’s been a busy couple of days at the Hamer Household–but, we have our carpet laid in our living room, the walls are still beautifully painted–and finally I gave in and just put up the ‘fake’ tree.

I was holding out for a real tree- but, I just couldn’t take it any more- I am a HUGE Christmas person, and not seeing a tree in our already bare living room was driving me crazy.  So, I lugged up our 9 foot tree from the basement- It is the one we bought a couple of years ago, when I decided that the 7.5 one was taking up too much space- it seemed to spread out forever!  So, when I found this thinner but taller tree–I knew it was PERFECT!

Saddest part for me…is no Christmas Tree smell :(

But– guess what?  The tree skirt I made looks gorgeous underneath it– fake or not!

I cannot wait to start putting Christmas gifts underneath!

Are you dying to know my secret on the tree skirt?

Okay—all you need are scissors, 4 yards of fabric (I used linen), a 5x5ft canvas drop cloth, and hot glue gun and sticks!

Yep–no sewing, just cutting, ruffling and glueing– easy peasy- and kinda fun! I think the result is SO WORTH it– Very shabby chic.

I got the full instructions from the HGTV site - but basically you will cut your canvas drop cloth into a circle- (They have a super-easy way to do this!)– I left mine 5×5, and didn’t bother cutting it down to 4.5 x 4.5.  Then you cut strips of fabric and glue it down around the circle, ruffling it as you go.  Oh, and use one of those heavy duty glue guns you can buy–not the mini ones…it goes a lot quicker! :)

Like I said, I used linen, which can be expensive- so use your coupons! (I did!)  Or… you can find another thin fabric to use—they suggested maybe even using an old bed sheet.

Who’s going to make one?  I’d love to see them in different colors-maybe burgundy or olive?

Here are a couple of other pictures from our tree decorating.

and…I thought I’d share some of my favorite ornaments on the tree – since our tree is a hodge podge of ornaments we’ve collected – most of them representing something in our lives.  Marriages, pregnancies, hobbies, vacations, etc.  So, every time we decorate the tree– we are reminded of all the love and memories we’ve shared over the years.

My ornament this year– we get a new ornament every year- representing something ‘big’ to us that year- This year I got my first DSLR, and it’s changed the way I take pictures :)

An ornament my mom painted for us, to remind us of the ornaments we hung on our family tree, that my grandparents painted–  We lost most of those ornaments in the flood- but…now we each have one of these.

My favorite Nebraska ornament of Mr. Pink’s- he has about 7 I think :)

Jaxen getting ready to hang up the Starbucks frappe cup – Can’t forget that one!

 Or this one… :)

Lil guy’s first baby ornament- I think both kids have at least 3 each of Baby’s 1st ornaments– being the only children in the family– no cousins whatsoever–everyone was excited to buy Baby’s 1st Ornaments!  This year, this ornament makes me miss the ‘baby days’

Here is my Baby Ornament– see…we’ve been collecting ornaments for a VERY LONG TIME! :)

Oh–and my favorite thing to unpack at Christmas–and now my kids’ favorite thing to unpack too!  Who remembers these?

Somehow in the last couple of years- Santa lost his cowboy hat—and he really needs it, because a cowboy should never be without his hat– (Have you seen Tim McGraw without his hat…? It’s weird.)

I actually listened and watched Santa singing “Have a Holly Jolly Christmas,” the whole time I typed this.

Thanks for letting me share part of our tree decorating with you–and I can’t wait to see the tree skirts you make!!

  8. Love the tree skirt. May have to try this. We do the same as you and add a new ornament every year. This year we have a few but my favorite new one has mirrors on it and it is to remind everyone that sees their reflection in it that they are a precious gift to our family.

  10. Love the tree skirt! Might have to try it. Another hint for pine smell….Yankee Candle electric plug in. My Mom plugs one in by her tree. Smells wonderful!

  11. Your tree skirt is gorgeous. I tried an artificial tree last year for the first time and was pleasantly surprised, however I too missed the smell. This year I bought Scentsicles at Michaels(with a coupon!)so hopefully I’ll have the artificial beautiful tree with a real tree smell. The Scentsicles smell like a fresh cut tree in the canister. I haven’t taken them out yet so we’ll see. They come in cinnamon scent too – I bought those as well. Thanks for sharing your beautiful family memories.

  12. These are wonderful photos. We have not put up our tree yet. Lots of things going on. Your skirt is lovely. Thanks for sharing.

  13. Beautiful, may have to try that for next year….My tree skirt is ancient…..we do the ornament thing too. Makes it even more fun to decorate the tree and remember what we did that year. When we travel we find an ornament from there, instead of a t-shirt……I love that both your kids have on elf shirts…..
and yup good ole Yankee Candle can’t be beat for that Christmas Tree smell…..Merry Christmas!

  16. WOW!! I can just see your tree skirt in lime green! Same color as my tree! I call it the “grandkid’s tree”. I use some of my old ornaments (including one I made in 2nd grade!), my Snowbaby collection of ornaments, and new ones each year of characters that the grandkids are in to…they get to hang them. Thanks for a fantastic idea!

  17. Sarah your tree skirt is beautiful. I have to know where you found the elf hat for your daughter. I have the same PJ’s as her for my granddaughter and I’d love to add the elf hat too. Please let me know. Thanks and God Bless.
